URTICARIA

WHAT IS URTICARIA OR HIVES?

Urticaria or hives, as we also call it, are changes on the skin that are similar to those after contact with nettles. It is an itchy skin rash with typical flat, pale or red swellings.

They can appear all over the body or only on certain parts. If the rash lasts for a few hours, we talk about acute urticaria and this is usually due to an allergy, e.g. to medicines, food or insect bites. When it lasts for a few weeks or months, we talk about chronic urticaria, which is rarely the result of an allergy. Acute urticaria usually lasts less than three weeks. One of its forms is contact urticaria, which occurs upon contact with certain allergens, e.g. meat, fish, some plants and animals, latex. 8% of people experience urticaria once in their lifetime, women are affected 2 to 4 times more often.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Urticarial changes in the skin are called hives. They always itch. They can be individual or merge with each other.

As mentioned, hives can cover the whole body or only certain parts. They usually disappear within a few hours, then may reappear in a few hours or days. They may even be accompanied by swelling of the eyelids, lips, face, palms or feet, sometimes swelling of the mucosa (e.g. tongue, throat, larynx).

WHAT ARE THE TRIGGERS?

The cause of urticaria is often not determined.

Otherwise, the triggers are often:

  • allergy to drugs (analgesics, antibiotics),
  • food allergy (preservatives, artificial colours, flavours, flavour enhancers),
  • allergy to insect stings,
  • allergy to pollen, mould, etc.,
  • infections – hepatitis B or C…
  • physical factors (e.g. cold, sun, skin pressure, vibration or rubbing of the skin, water (aquagenic urticaria)),
  • autoimmune reactions.

HOW CAN WE TREAT URTICARIA OURSELVES?

In the first place, it is very important to avoid causes and triggering factors (e.g. heat, tight clothing, alcohol). The point is to eliminate the symptoms.

The skin needs to:

  • calm down,
  • be moisturized,
  • reduce inflammation and
  • be allowed to regenerate quickly.
