INSECT BITES

WHAT ARE INSECT BITES?

We talk about insect bites when a certain insect injects poison or saliva with a sting to the skin. A small local redness that itches, tingles or burns usually appears on the place of the sting. In most cases, the symptoms clear up within a few hours or days and present only an unpleasant nuisance.

But in some cases, the poison of the insect causes an allergic reaction, which can be extremely dangerous, as it can, in worst cases, cause cramps, strong pain, intense swelling, difficulties breathing and even loss of consciousness. In these cases, medical treatment is necessary.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON INSECT BITES?

The most common are bites of mosquitos, ants, midges, and horseflies that usually do not cause problems, but they are nevertheless potential transmitters of viruses and infections.

But when it comes to bites of bees, wasps, bumblebees, and hornets, they often cause an allergic reaction

HOW CAN WE PREVENT INSECT BITES?

We should avoid places that attract insects: piles of fallen leaves, stagnant water, flowering plants.

We wear appropriate clothes and footwear and as an additional protection repellents can also be used.

We do not leave sweet drinks uncovered when outdoor, we also avoid creams and perfumes with strong smells that attract insects.

IF YOU HAVE BEEN STUNG:

If you have been stung, cool the area of a bite with cold water, ice or at least a cool metallic object.
If you have been stung by a bee, first carefully remove the sting as the insect usually leaves it in the skin (be careful not to squeeze it, not to inject more poison to the body), only then continue with the cooling of the affected area. Different ointments for alleviating the inflammatory reaction that can be bought without prescription are also helpful.
