BRITTLE NAILS
WHAT ARE FRAGILE AND BRITTLE NAILS?
Nails are made of keratin, a complex structural protein that is an integral part of the skin, nails, hair, etc. Their role is to protect our fingers and toes, but they are also an indicator of our health.
Brittle nails are one of the most common problems, but they are rarely caused by a disease. Usually, the root cause is stress and the environment which we live in. Brittle nails are usually dry, a layer of the nail can peel off, which is called nail delamination or nail psoriasis. This causes a nail to break and fall off. For the most part, fragile and brittle nails are a problem for the elderly or people with dry skin. Such nails are more common in patients with psoriasis.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF BRITTLE NAILS?
Brittle nails are often caused by stress, reduced immune resistance, improper diet, lack of vitamins A & B, lack of elements such as iron and sulphur, thyroid dysfunction, they also occur during pregnancy due to poor blood circulation, nerve dysfunction or congenital disorders.
Nail delamination or split nails can also often occur due to excessive nail soaking (e.g. work in the kitchen, in hairdressing salons), frequent use of nail polish and nail polish remover. In general, external factors such as soaps, shampoos, cleaning products, chemicals, or even seasons with dry periods have an additional impact on nail fragility, delamination or splitting. Nail growth thus slows or even stops.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Initially, small cavities (foveolae) appear, the nails discolour, are brittle, and break. They easily split and delaminate.
Foveolae can also occur in healthy people. The colour of the nail bed often changes, the nail rises and separates from the nail base, redness and swelling of the cuticle may also be present. Most often, these changes are visible from the index finger to the little finger, they are less common on the thumb.
WHERE DOES DELAMINATION MOST OFTEN APPEAR ON NAILS?
- on the base of the nails – in addition to nail psoriasis, the result of treatment with certain medications, e.g. retinoids, can be seen in these places; signs of lichen planus are seen;
- on the tips of the nails – the impact of chemicals (soaps, cleaning products) on the nails, frequent nail soaking, birth defects, also aging.
